Hundreds Turn Out for Presidents' Day Protests Across the Northland

Duluth turned out this Presidents' Day to show its opposition to the reactionary policies coming out of Washington. Between 150-200 folks filled the four corners of Lake Ave. & Superior St. for the Duluth 50501 protest at 4pm. And another 50-75 gathered at 5th Ave. W & Superior St. for the Stand With Immigrants protest at 5pm.

It was a bitterly cold day, but the solidarity was heart warming! Thank you to everyone who was able to make it, and a extra huge thank you to the hardy folks who braved the cold long enough to attend both. You all rock!

Calling Out Transphobia in Our Community

Over the weekend, one of the owners of At Sara's Table / Chester Creek Cafe, Barbara Neubert, shared a transphobic meme and at least one other meme in support of JK Rowling on her personal Facebook page. This might sound like an issue of free speech, but it's not, it's hate speech. Its purpose is to dehumanize us. That it was platformed by a respected elder in the local progressive and LGBTQ communities is even more concerning. Many politicians who have pushed for draconian transphobic laws have used JK Rowling's own tweets as a justification to punish us, and keep us closeted. It also came to light that her wife and co-owner, Carla Blumberg, told a non-binary employee that they ought to dress more feminine because "I get that your generation believes that sexual manipulation is utterly evil, but, nevertheless, it works." Superior Police Tase a Door Dash Driver After He Took a Wrong Turn

Ian Cuypers is a door dash driver who was delivering food in Superior in February. He was unfamiliar with the neighborhood, and while looking for an address he accidently took a wrong turn down a one way street. This led to Superior Police pulling him over. Multiple cops appeared on the scene. With weapons drawn and pointed at him, Ian was instructed to get out of the car with his hands up, to face away from the officers, and walk backwards towards them. When he attempted to explain himself, he was tased. This is an outrageous incident of unnecessary force. Video footage has been posted online.
