Socialist & Working Class History

The Northwoods Socialist Collective was founded in the Fall of 2020.  The initiative came out of a proposal from Carl Sack (an amazing local activist who tragically passed away in the Spring of 2024) to create an organization where local revolutionary socialists could come together and coordinate their work. 

Despite being a relatively young group, a number of our founding members had been active in the local socialist movement going back to the 1990s.  But even more significantly, we stand on the shoulders of a  socialist movement that has a rich and deep history.  Understanding the lessons of that history, both the victories and the defeats, is crucial so that we can successfully move forward in our efforts to make the world a better place.  Below is a series of links to articles on local, national and international working class history.  Check back often to see what has been added.

Calling Out Transphobia in Our Community

Over the weekend, one of the owners of At Sara's Table / Chester Creek Cafe, Barbara Neubert, shared a transphobic meme and at least one other meme in support of JK Rowling on her personal Facebook page. This might sound like an issue of free speech, but it's not, it's hate speech. Its purpose is to dehumanize us. That it was platformed by a respected elder in the local progressive and LGBTQ communities is even more concerning. Many politicians who have pushed for draconian transphobic laws have used JK Rowling's own tweets as a justification to punish us, and keep us closeted. It also came to light that her wife and co-owner, Carla Blumberg, told a non-binary employee that they ought to dress more feminine because "I get that your generation believes that sexual manipulation is utterly evil, but, nevertheless, it works." Superior Police Tase a Door Dash Driver After He Took a Wrong Turn

Ian Cuypers is a door dash driver who was delivering food in Superior in February.  He was unfamiliar with the neighborhood, and while looking for an address he accidently took a wrong turn down a one way street.  This led to Superior Police pulling him over.  Multiple cops appeared on the scene.  With weapons drawn and pointed at him, Ian was instructed to get out of the car with his hands up, to face away from the officers, and walk backwards towards them.  When he attempted to explain himself, he was tased. MISSION STATEMENT: The Northwoods Socialist Collective is a group of working class activists based in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.  We believe everyone should have a say in the matters that affect their lives.  That is why we are socialists.  We advocate for a socialism that is revolutionary, internationalist and feminist, as well as being anti-racist, anti-ableist, anti-imperialist, environmentally sustainable and fully committed to LGBTQAI+ liberation.  We invite you to join us in the struggle to make our communities and world a better place! Below is an attempt to list the things that we do, and the framework that we have for achieving the goals listed is our Mission Statement.
