As a general rule, we oppose regressive taxation, and believe that only the wealthy should have to pay taxes. But the system currently has education workers, students and our community backed into a corner. Open enrollment, charter schools and unfunded mandates have all combined to create a situation where if this referendum doesn't pass, we will be looking at significant layoffs and reduction of services. So we are calling for a "YES" vote, while at the same time urging everyone to redouble their efforts to create a more sustainable and equitable way of funding public education.
There are two upcoming protests that we are organizing around this issue that we urge folks to try and make it out to. The first will be on Friday, Oct. 23 from 4:30 to 5:30pm. It'll be held on the corner of London Road and 21st Ave E in Duluth and has the theme of "Vote YES for Education".
The second aims to not only call for a YES vote, but to also call out the massive amount of taxpayer money being used in the war against Iran, and to call instead for money to be used to fund schools, not war. That protest will be on election day (Tuesday, Nov. 3) from 5 to 6pm on the corner of 46th Ave W & Grand Avenue in Duluth. Hope to see you there!
