Campus Activism

The Northwoods Socialist Collective seeks to be a resource to student activists looking to get involved in the community, as well as to help connect activists from different schools. We support a number of existing campus activist projects, but we are also open to helping set up new socialist clubs at local universities, community colleges and high schools.  Below is a modest list of campus organizing resources that we've put together.  Check back often to see what has been added.
  • Pop-Up Socialist Meetings:  In addition to the monthly community meetings that the Northwoods Socialist Collective holds, from time to time we hold "pop-up socialist meetings" at the different campuses in the region.  These are small, informal affairs where we meet in a campus lobby or a nearby park or coffee shop, and give a talk on socialism, or a current event.  It's a way we for us to network with campus activists and make it easier for students to plug in to our movements.  If you'd like to help put on a pop-up meeting at your school, message us at northwoods.socialists@gmail.com.
  •  Pop-Up Socialist Literature Tables: From time to time we set up "pop-up socialist lit tables" on area campuses.  Since we're not officially recognized at most schools currently, we just occupy and unused table on the fly, and put out some leaflets.
  • Campus Bulletin Boards:  The Northwoods Socialist Collective makes a point of dropping off leaflets and other activist literature at area campus at least once a month.  Here are some places we try to keep stocked:
    • UMD: the bulletin board in the Ven Den in the basement of Bohannon Hall and the bulletin board outside of the Residence Hall Dining Center on the 3rd floor of the Kirby Student Center.
    • UWS: the kiosks in the Yellowjacket Union, the bulletin board in the Jim Dan Hill Library and the bulletin boards in the Social Sciences wing of Swenson Hall.
    • CSS: the bulletin boards in the main stairwell of Tower Hall.
    • LSC: the bulletin boards on the 2nd floor of the Main Building (M2).
    • FDLTCC: the bulletin boards on the 2nd floor of the Main Building of the Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College.
    • NC: the bulletin boards in the Northland College Ponzio Student Center.
Below is a list of student activist groups at the various colleges and high schools throughout the Northwoods.

A Little Bit About Us . . .

MISSION STATEMENT: The Northwoods Socialist Collective is a group of working class activists based in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.  We believe everyone should have a say in the matters that affect their lives.  That is why we are socialists.  We advocate for a socialism that is revolutionary, internationalist and feminist, as well as being anti-racist, anti-ableist, anti-imperialist, environmentally sustainable and fully committed to LGBTQAI+ liberation.  We invite you to join us in the struggle to make our communities and world a better place! Below is an attempt to list the things that we do, and the framework that we have for achieving the goals listed is our Mission Statement. POLITICAL EDUCATION: We feel that a crucial part of building a socialist movement is political education.  We encourage our members to study Marxist theory, and to apply it to understand how the world works and what can be done to change it.  We put on monthly Socialism and...

Duluth Turns Out in Oppositon to Proposals to Criminalize Homelessness

The City of Duluth has proposed a series of ordinance s, which if passed, would further criminalize being homeless, as well as allow for the city to shut down the Gaza protest encampment in front of City Hall.  The City announced its plans at a press conference on July 9.  The ordinances were subsequently proposed to the City Council on July 15 by Councilor Tara Swenson.  It is believed they may be voted on as soon as the July 29 Council meeting. While Mayor Reinert's administration, and their supporters on the Council, are trying to frame their initiative as a benevolent package to improve public safety, what they really are is a grab bag of reactionary proposals  to further criminalize being homeless, as well as various forms of protest.
