The protests were held in response to national calls of action from Indivisible and Project 50501. A wide range of local groups were involved on the ground in each community. The protests were multi-issue, organized around the theme of "hands off" ~ with participants urged to make signs about the issues under attacks that were most important to them. Among the most common themes on signs were support for trans and immigrant rights, opposition to cuts tin Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, and support for federal workers and national parks. All in all it was a powerful demonstration of the deep opposition to these unprecedented cuts being carried out or proposed by the Trump administration.
For our part, the Northwoods Socialist Collective saltues the organizers and participants that turned out. We feel that mass action protests are an important and powerful tool in building social movements. We very much disagree with the sentiment that some local Democratic Party officials have been pushing that folks need to "calm down" (a message, that for example, was pushed at the March 29 Duluth Town Hall organized by Practicing Democracy). People are right to be angry, and we need to fight back. Protests and pickets are an important first step, and we hope that the resistance movement can continue to grow and become even more militant.
Project 50501 has called for a national day of action on April 19. Stay tuned for more info on that. La lutta continua ~ the struggle continues!
