Spread the Love, Channel the Rage

The first couple of weeks of Trump's second administration has seen a wave of attacks on immigrants and trans people.  ICE is sweeping the country, raiding workplaces and communities with the aim of deporting undocumented workers.  And so far at least six executive orders have been issued attacking trans people - from barring government agencies from recognizing more than one gender to mandating that trans women be transferred to men's prisons.

This deluge of reactionary and bigotry fueled attacks can be overwhelming.  But for those of us who can, it is crucial that we stand up and fight back!  The Northwoods Socialist Collective is holding a series of events in solidarity with immigrants and trans people.  We have three events planned for the coming weeks, with more that we'll be announcing soon.  Please help us spread the word, and if you can, plug in to them.

Friday, February 7: To Immigrants With Love (occupying part of the Mall food court to make valentine's for immigrants); 6-6:45pm in the food court of the Miller Hill Mall in Duluth. https://www.facebook.com/events/2357920771241146/
Monday, February 17: Stand With Immigrants on Presidents' Day; 5-5:45pm on the corner of Superior Street & 5th Ave. W in downtown Duluth. https://www.facebook.com/events/969998021200608/
Saturday, March 1: MAKE ART, NOT HATE Trans Solidarity "Art-In" @ Target; 10:30am in the Starbucks seating area of the Duluth Target store. https://www.facebook.com/events/491620556962841/

If you know of any more events let us know and we'll gladly help promote them.  Standing together, we have power.  Together we can beat these right wing attacks on our communities.  An injury to one is an injury to all!

Duluth Turns Out in Oppositon to Proposals to Criminalize Homelessness

The City of Duluth has proposed a series of ordinance s, which if passed, would further criminalize being homeless, as well as allow for the city to shut down the Gaza protest encampment in front of City Hall.  The City announced its plans at a press conference on July 9.  The ordinances were subsequently proposed to the City Council on July 15 by Councilor Tara Swenson.  It is believed they may be voted on as soon as the July 29 Council meeting. While Mayor Reinert's administration, and their supporters on the Council, are trying to frame their initiative as a benevolent package to improve public safety, what they really are is a grab bag of reactionary proposals  to further criminalize being homeless, as well as various forms of protest.
