This year saw a variety of events on or around May Day. May Day weekend kicked off with a very successful Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser by the HOTDISH Militia on April 29. Well over 100 people turned out to bowl and raise funds for folks who need help paying for local abortion services. The Northwoods Socialist Collective was proud to have a participating team that raised over $1,200 for the event!
The following day, on April 30, and indoor rally was held under the theme of “Organizing for Power”. It featured a program of labor leaders talking about the power of solidarity, and collective organizing. The headline speaker was Bernie Burnham, the MN AFL-CIO president. About 75 folks attended the event, which was held at the Harrison Community Center in west Duluth. DSA took the lead on organizing the event, but it was also endorsed by a number of local unions – from the MN Nurses Association to the Steelworkers – as well as the Northwoods Socialist Collective.
On actual May Day, a Missing & Murdered Indigenous Relatives ceremony was held on the wind swept Duluth Harbor. This is an annual event, that in the past was organized by Babette Sandman and Shawn Carr, but that this year saw the passing of the torch to Jessica Gigagaakoons Smith.
And the final May Day event is happening May 2 at 6pm at the Duluth Building for Women. The Northwoods Socialist Collective’s monthly Socialism and a Slice meeting will be taking place, and we’re hosting a presentation on the history of International Workers Day. Come by if you can!
Thank you to everyone who turned out, and/or helped organize around May Day this year. It was a powerful and intersectional series of events!
